Newsletter July-September 2024

Project Roshni:

At Project Roshni, we believe that capacity building is essential for our team’s effectiveness in supporting children’s education. To this end, we conducted capacity-building sessions on the Right to Education Act – 2009 for our young leaders and team members. This training aims to empower them to play a pivotal role in mainstreaming children who have dropped out or never enrolled in schools.

This quarter, we have made significant strides toward our goal of enrolling 200 children in formal education, with 198 successfully admitted so far.

Key Achievements:

  • Admissions: 198 children enrolled, nearing our target of 200.

  • Aadhaar Cards Issued: 103 children received their Aadhaar cards.

  • Bank Accounts Opened: 156 bank accounts were established to promote financial inclusion.

  • Birth Certificates Issued: 39 children now have their birth certificates.

Next Goal: Ensuring 100% Retention
Our next focus is to ensure that all enrolled children remain in school. We are committed to providing essential support in elementary skills through creative arts, enhancing their learning experience and helping them thrive.

Project Kadam:

Project Kadam, launched to provide academic support to children aged 6-19 years, has also seen considerable progress. Out of our target of 100 children, 81 have already been enrolled and are actively receiving academic assistance in subjects such as English, Maths, and Hindi.

We are committed to ensuring that these children receive the support they need to excel academically and build a strong foundation for their future education. Our dedicated team continues to offer personalized guidance to help them overcome academic challenges and succeed in their studies.

Project Buniyaad

In this quarter, Project Buniyaad continued its focus on maternal and child health while expanding its reach with several new initiatives.

  • Capacity Building and Digital Solutions: Our knowledge partner, Heights and Mind Foundation, conducted refresher training for our team on maternal and child nutrition, covering hygiene, stunting, breastfeeding, and complementary feeding. We also integrated digital solutions to monitor child growth every 100 days, providing personalized counseling to mothers based on height and weight data.

  • Registrations and Workshops: We registered 40 pregnant women and 27 infants, conducting 3 workshops to educate mothers on nutrition and child care.

  • Social Protection Awareness: Additionally, 30 women, including pregnant and lactating mothers, were sensitized about key social protection schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Matra Vandana Yojana, Labour Card, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and Ladli Yojana, empowering them with knowledge of essential government benefits.

Project Raah

This quarter, Project Raah engaged over 35 students aged 10-17 through a series of creative workshops designed to build life skills and encourage self-expression:

  • Storytelling through Videography with Yousuf Saeed: In a 3-day workshop, students learned basic videography techniques and created their own short videos. Yousuf Saeed’s insights and hands-on approach inspired the students, who proudly showcased their work.

  • Creative Thinking with Hiba Siddiqui: Students explored problem-solving through convergent and divergent thinking. Engaging group activities kept the energy high as they worked on practical solutions to everyday challenges.

  • Art-based Expression: Exploring Freedom with Samina Mishra: Samina Mishra led a powerful session on “Freedom,” encouraging students to reflect and write poems on their personal interpretations of freedom in school, home, and community.

These workshops provided students with fresh perspectives and practical skills in videography, creative thinking, and self-expression through art and poetry.

Education

Every child deserves a good education. Kadam Learning Center was established in 2016 after

conducting a survey and focus groups in Ambedkar Camp, a jhuggi(slum) in Trilokpuri for children in
class 5-12. Most of the children are first generation learners. Although most go to a public school, their
level of learning is much below the grade they are in.

Key features of this program are:

  • 4 batches of 15-20 students Monday-Friday.
  • Tutoring with focus on improving Maths and reading skills.
  • Assistance with homework and exam preparations.
  • Inculcate critical thinking, interest in learning through storytelling and discussions.
  • Creative activities.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Outdoor activities

Women and Child Center

The first 1000 days of a child are critical for its mental and physical development. We are planning to partner with Heights and Minds, a non-profit organization based in Netherlands to setup a center for mothers and babies to ensure every child reaches its full potential by monitoring their growth in the first 1000 days and educating and training mothers.

The key highlights are:

  • Register and monitor height and weight of a child at least 10 times in the first 1,000 days using HMF’s Service Highway Digital Platform.
  • Setup a café run by youth with healthy food options
  • Raise awareness among parents about their child’s growth, measuring growth
  • Provide counselling focusing on behavior change in feeding practices and local solutions to provide a diverse adequate diet within the family’s means
  • Educate mothers about healthy eating for themselves and the entire family as well as parenting and early stimulation skills in a fun way using digital materials, videos, and games and encourage active participation and sharing amongst peers
  • Educate mothers and adolescent girls about anaemia, its impact and good diet
  • Income generating activities for long term sustainability, such as craft, producing and growing foods and selling healthy meals.

Skill Development Center

Over the years we realized many of these first generation learners coming from poor and marginalized communities are unaware of different colleges, technical courses or career options. They lack confidence and no one to guide them. They are unable to take advantage of the different opportunities available. To address this gap we plan to establish a Skill Development Center that provides the following training:

  • Basic computer skills
  • Web design and video making
  • Communication skills with a focus on  Spoken English
  • Academic and career counseling
  • Workshops on topics such as gender equality, responsible citizenship, sustainability, climate change, mental health
